Sales Jobs

Getting a sales job is one thing, keeping a sales job is quite another. To excel in one of the many jobs in sales that Target Consulting Group offers, candidates should be familiar with the foundations of sales techniques.

Anyone in a sales job will tell you that building a relationship with your customers is critical to success. Those candidates looking for jobs in sales should understand the following techniques and put them to use. These techniques began with door-to-door salesmen in the 1950s but still relate to sales jobs today:

  1. Adaptability - The ideal sales candidate should be able to deal with any type of personality. During the screening process, Target Consulting brings various personality types into the mix to see how candidates handle the changes in demeanor. An adaptable candidate will adjust his/her own mannerisms to meet the mood and the tone of the person to whom he/she is speaking.
  2. Articulate - Communication makes or breaks a deal. Proper grammar, vocabulary, and usage are important in any position that acts as representative for a company.
  3. Energetic - The energy level and alertness of a sales representative is directly related to his/her success as sales reps. Target Consulting looks for candidates who possess both an energy level that will keep them on the trail of leads, and a level of keen alertness that will enable them to notice details that may lead to future business.
  4. Confident - A sales person that gives the impression of knowing what he/she is talking about goes far. Confidence when selling your products or services can be built by training and practice, so during the interview process see self-confidence as an indicator of how well they a candidate will perform.
  5. Self Reliance - One of the more independent positions within any company is that of the sales representative. When interviewing candidates Target considers the following: Are they self-motivated and able to make decisions on their own? Do they show confidence in their judgment so that you feel comfortable with them making decisions on their own? Will they maintain a schedule geared towards long-term success?
  6. Integrity - Target Consulting considers integrity to be a critical trait for a sales person. We consider the following during the screening process: How does the candidate speak about a former (or current) employer? Does he/she seem loyal to their customers? Does he/she appear to be trustworthy, possessing a strong work ethic?
  7. Good listener - Listening is perhaps the most important quality of all for a sales professional. A good sales representative must be able to listen to the customer's needs, complaints, interests, and anything else a customer chooses to discuss. With today's emphasis on "relationship selling," if sales reps don't listen closely to their clients' problems and position their products and services as a solution to those problems, they won't be very successful.

Today there are dozens more types of sales styles and techniques that professionals employ in their sales jobs. So how do you know what works and what doesn't? It really boils down to what works for you and what works for your product. Think about your target market and their perceptions about your product type. Do they know they need it and simply have to choose from the various brands on the market? Or, do they have no idea how much the product would help them be more productive? Do they even know about your product? Will the sales call educational for them - or you?

So, even though there are many sales methods for succeeding in jobs in sales, the choices are narrowed as you think about your market and what their needs are, as well as what their expectations may be. The following are tips that are helpful for any sales job. Simply follow these basic guidelines to sell more effectively:

  • Listen to the emotional side of your prospect or client
  • Focus on your prospect or client's needs
  • Use language that focuses on your prospect or client
  • Help your prospect see the bottom line
  • Find out your prospect's priorities
  • Know your prospect
  • Focus on why they should buy - not their objections
  • Sell the benefits - not the product
  • Never rush the sale or the customer
  • Know your products, as well as the market - be a resource
  • Follow through with promises
  • Focus on your client's success
  • Use explanations rather than excuses
